Ballistic composite, fire retardant additives push beyond company’s core thermoplastic product line.

TORONTO – High-tech engineering and manufacturing company, Innovative Composites International Inc. (ICI), announced that it has filed provisional patent applications on a composite ballistic and blast mitigation panel as well as two advanced fire retardant products to be utilized in ICI’s existing product line as well as in stand alone applications.

ICI’s Ballistic/Blast Mitigation System is a composite sandwich panel that provides protection from explosive energy as well as shrapnel and bullets. The company says applications may include command and communication structures for the military, protective wall sections for vulnerable areas in government buildings, as well as lobby and reception areas of banks, hotels and other commercial buildings.

In addition, the company’s Fire Retardant Resin/Additive is non-toxic, bromide and halogen-free fire retardant additive that can be incorporated into polymers, rubbers, foams and other synthetic materials. The compound is intended to replace brominated organic compounds, phosphorous, or other environmentally hazardous materials in present industral use.

Along the same lines, its Fire Retardant Binder can be utilized to bond a fire retardant agent to a variety of composite and textile materials in order to create durable protection for military, fire fighter and police uniforms, among other safety-related applications.
