Tesla says limited-edition Model S electric sedan will travel 480 km on a battery charge

Palo Alto, Calif. — Electric sports car maker Tesla Motors Inc. announced plans to offer a limited-edition version of next year’s Model S sedan that will have a battery powerful enough to keep the car going for 480 kilometres (300 miles) on a single charge.

That’s much farther than last year’s Nissan Leaf, which can go up to 100 miles (160 kilometres) on a charge and an improvement to the typical range of its Roadster sports car (245 miles /393 km).

Tesla vice-president for worldwide sales George Blankenship said in a Web posting Monday that Tesla plans to sell a Model S Signature Series with the extended range in North America starting in mid-2012.

Tesla will also sell versions of the all-electric Model S with 230-mile (370-kilometre) and 160-mile (257-kilometre) batteries later in 2012. A right-hand drive Model S also is due in 2012.
