Fastest way to get 3D model from 2D image
By Design Engineering Staff
CAD/CAM/CAE CAD research and development SigGraphTech demo allows users to quickly model object geometry from a single image.
At SigGraph Asia 2013, researchers from the Interdisciplinary Center in Israel and Tel Aviv University unveiled a tech demo of 3-Sweep, a 3D modeling app that can quickly extract editable geometry from 2D images.
Instead of inferring geometric shapes, as in other 2D to 3D conversion processes that require multiple photos, 3-Sweep requires only one photo. While not totally automatic, users can quickly create 3D shapes with three simple shape definitions: Two lines to sketch the basic cross-section of the object to be modeled and one movement to define the direction of the sweep. The application quickly infers the dimensions of the 3D object based on the outline of the 2D image.
Once the model is created, 3-Sweep applies textures lifted from the photo. In addition, components of the model can be removed or multiplied. Check out the video below for multiple demonstrations.
