File Translation in Autodesk Inventor 2013

Some users missed this in my “Whats New in Inventor 2013” post and, since I’ve been getting a lot of questions on translation, I thought it would be a good idea to repost the following chart with an additional tip for anyone translating files.

Now for that extra tip: Before you ever open a new file for translation always double check your Import Options. Click the Options button after you have selected the type of file you wish to import. Here you will have a plethera of options to adjust and depending on the contents of the translation file, you might have to massage the settings to your liking. Remember, not all 3D Modeling users are created equal and not all CAD software exports quite the same way.

The other item to note here that I get asked frequently about is where these files save to when loading. Well that is the area in the red I highlighted in the upper portion of the box. You can also control the names of these folders with settings in your project file you are using as well. This is really important when you start working with Vault since you may start to see alot of Imported Component folders if you don’t figure this out ahead of time.
