On his CAD training site, Using Solidworks, SW expert and blogger Ben Eadie has posted an in-depth, 45-minute webinar on how to import point cloud, STL and other CAD data as editable geometry without having to purchase the expensive Premium version of the popular 3D solid modeler.
The technique combines Google Sketch Up, some open source mesh conversion and clean-up software and a bit of patience. The reward is a treasure trove of free 3D models ready to be imported to Solidworks.
