New funding available through CME in Ontario for acquisition of 3D printing equipment

ONTARIO - The Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev) is continuing to fund the CME SMART program in the amount of $20 million through to 2017.

CME’s SMART Advanced Technologies for Global Growth program is designed to assist southern Ontario manufacturers who seek to prepare their operations through investment in technologies for advanced industrial processes such as additive manufacturing.

“This is a welcomed contribution and CME with its Canada Makes network are looking forward to delivering this program on behalf of FedDev,” said Martin Lavoie, CME Director of Policy. “The SMART program allows CME’s Canada Makes to assist in the adoption of additive manufacturing in both Ontario and Canada, the opportunities 3D printing offers Ontario businesses are endless.”

The CME SMART Program has provided direct funding to over 1,100 Ontario companies in financial need. Funds from the CME SMART Program facilitate improved productivity and represent an investment in their community’s future.

Project Description/Purpose/Objective

The purpose of this project is to provide funding to CME in order to deliver their new programming “SMART Advanced Technologies for Global Growth” (SATG). The SATG program will have the following attributes:
The initiative will provide funding to southern Ontario manufacturers to conduct Advanced Technology Assessments and Projects.

• Advanced Technology Assessments will be undertaken by qualified professionals who will examine current manufacturing performance of a company requesting an assessment and recommend how advanced technologies could be implemented to significantly improve the company’s efficiencies and capabilities. Advanced technology assessments will be eligible for funding up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum non-repayable contribution of $15,000.

• Advanced Technology Adaptation/Adoption Projects will focus on improving productivity through adapting or adopting advanced technologies. Eligible activities will include the adaption or adoption of new or upgraded advanced technologies, materials or processes. Advanced technology projects will be eligible for funding up to 35% of eligible costs to a maximum non-repayable contribution of $100,000.

• Note that the combined maximum non-repayable contribution per SME under the SATG program is limited to $100,000.

The program will be open to southern Ontario manufacturers that meet the following criteria:
• Employ between 15 and 1,000 employees in southern Ontario;
• Have been in business continuously for two years and demonstrate financial stability;
• Operate a manufacturing facility or facilities located in southern Ontario;
• Demonstrate they are engaged in international markets (i.e. companies that export, are going export or are selling in a value chain leading to export); and
• Propose a project that focuses on adapting or adopting advanced technologies.

In addition to the criteria above, preference may be given to projects that are:
• Diversifying a regional economy; and
• From new applicants who have not received funding through any of the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters SMART branded programming.
