Robotic “two-wheeler” functions like a motorized office chair for the office bound.

Tokyo — Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled the new UNI-CUB personal mobility device. Based on technology developed earlier in the company’s U3-X device and ASIMO robot, the UNI-CUB features Honda’s balance control technology and an omni-directional driving wheel system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System).

According to the company, these technologies allow the rider to control speed, move in any direction, turn and stop, by shifting his or her weight. Since the rider can freely move forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally, he or she can quickly and easily maneuver among other people.

In addition, UNI-CUB’s saddle-style form factor allows the rider’s legs to reach the ground yet maintains eye-level height with other pedestrians. Its lithium-ion battery produces a maximum speed of 6 km/h and a range of 6 km

In June 2012, Honda says it will begin conducting demonstration testing of UNI-CUB with Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, to explore the feasibility and practical applications of the device in a range of environments.
