15-Jan-Blackberry-QNX-IoT-625LAS VEGAS — BlackBerry Ltd. is getting behind the technology that will eventually link your smartphone and tablet to all the other devices in your home through the Internet.

The Waterloo, Ont.-based company unveiled the foundation of its Internet of Things platform at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It marks one of the first steps towards selling the technology to firms such as automakers and shipping companies.

The Internet of Things describes the cloud-based technology that connects objects to wireless networks. It’s considered by many as the next stage in allowing consumers and businesses to communicate with the various other electronic devices in their lives.

BlackBerry says it will use technology developed by its QNX Software Systems division, which already makes interactive infotainment systems built into vehicle dashboards.
