Canadian PT/MC market experiences small rebound in June

Canadian manufacturers experienced an increase in sales whileU.S. manufacturers had a drop in sales in June 2009 according to salesdata released by the Power Transmission Distributors Association(PTDA). Confidence in the Canadian market (as measured on a scale of 1to 10 with 10 being most optimistic) rose slightly by 0.1 percent fromlast month to 4.4, while U.S. confidence is holding at a currentnegative position of 4.8 for the third consecutive month.

Canadian manufacturers’ sales increased 7.6 percentcompared to May 2009. Sales were down 25.5 percent when compared to thesame period last year.

U.S. manufacturers’ sales fell by 2.8 percent inJune 2009 when compared to May 2009. Sales in June 2009 fell 32.9percent compared to the same period last year. Orders in June 2009decreased by 5.3 percent over May 2009 orders.

Product-by-product sales between May 2009 and June 2009reflect the change in sales experienced by U.S. and Canadianmanufacturers. Three of nine product categories for U.S.manufacturers—gear products, standard industrial motors, andmechanical drive systems and other PT products—posted salesgains. For Canadian manufacturers, five product categories posted salesgains—mounted bearings, gear products, standard industrialmotors, variable speed drives, and mechanical drive systems and otherPT.
