SolidWorks 2011 makes its debut

For those designing sheet metal parts, 2011 includes bend calculation tables that let them calculate the developed length of parts. Also, new routing capabilities assist with the creation of pipe, tube and conduit runs (especially when supports and hangers are involved). For example, designers can trace existing geometry to guide the route path. SolidWorks associates the outside diameter (not the centerline) of the pipe/tube/cable/conduit with the geometry.

Analysis
New 2D Simplification helps speed up parts analysis. Users can select an intersecting plane and apply the loads and restraints to perform static, nonlinear, pressure vessel, and thermal studies. SolidWorks Simulation instantly calculates the results and displays them on the full 3D model – with no waiting.

In addition, a new Electronics Cooling Module lets users set up and execute thermal simulations and an HVAC module works the same way for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Expanded part libraries now include fans, materials, two-resistor components, and integrated circuit packages. New analysis variables include local air quality, ambient temperature, and Joule heating.

PDM
Beyond Solidworks proper, the new product line up includes enhancements to a new menu bar for SolidWorks Enterprise PDM integrates into the Windows Explorer file manager. Also, SolidWorks Design Checker has been integrated into SolidWorks Enterprise PDM software to streamline the release of designs to manufacturing.

3DVIA Composer’s drag-and-drop functionality creates linked views to next and previous steps forsharing procedures.

For technical documentation, 3DVIA Composer now includes an interactive “storyboard” capability that can create a step-by-step linked narrative for recipients, such as a colleague in manufacturing, a prospect considering a big contract, or a consumer actually using the product. Users simply drag and drop views to create interactive procedures.

The latest version of SolidWorks Sustainability software now includes Australia and South America in its manufacturing and use regions and also offers new support for custom materials.

SolidWorks 2011 is due to be officially released in October 2011.
