UofW, NRC announce AI, IoT, Cybersecurity research hub

Collaboration hub to focus on patents and commercialization of AI and related technologies.

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) and the University of Waterloo announced the launch of the NRC Waterloo Collaboration on Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Cybersecurity. The centre will be an innovation hub for artificial intelligence research that contributes to intelligent logistics.

Housed on the University of Waterloo campus, the Collaboration on Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Cybersecurity brings together 20 researchers and students from the National Research Council of Canada and the University of Waterloo. The NRC and the University of Waterloo have been collaborating on computer science research and development for more than 10 years.

“Fundamental research is made stronger through collaboration,” says UofW President Feridun Hamdullahpur. “This new hub offers the National Research Council and the University of Waterloo an opportunity to make significant strides that will develop Canada’s strength in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things, and expand on our legacy of global impact.”

• “Automated Material Synthesis using Deep Reinforcement Learning,” led by Mark Crowley of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo and Isaac Tamblyn from NRC.

• “Neuromorphics for Vision-based Movement Planning and Control,” led by Chris Eliasmith of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo and Terry Stewart from NRC.

• “Reliable Gesture Recognition in Virtual Reality Environment,” led by Ed Lank from the Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo and Keiko Katsuragawa from NRC.

• “Battery-free Touch Sensors for Internet of Things,” led by Omid Abari of the Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo and Keiko Katsuragawa from NRC.
